Illustrations inspired by ‘In the Dark Places of Wisdom’ by Peter Kingsley
On this occasion we are transported to caves, temples and underground alcoves where the characters that I illustrate carry out the rites of incubation, quietism and shamanism. These ceremonies were the origin of metaphysical messages from that remote moment. The iatromantis or guardians of dreams have an important mediatory role somewhere between wakefulness and enlightenment that can suppose the intermediary states of consciousness, until reaching the deepest sleep. Peter Kingsley associates these experiences with the god Apollo and the famous (at least for him) and misinterpreted, Parmenides’ poem and his ‘trip to the underworld’.This trip, proposed by the pre-Socratic philosopher and reconsidered by the English writer, has been the cornerstone of the development of ‘Rituals’.
